ACV or apple cider vinegar is all the rave right now, and rightfully so! I was sold the ACV dream when looking for a natural facial toner/makeup remover to cleanse my skin with and was totally blown away by the results!
Toners never really worked for me. I always had breakouts as soon as I applied the darned stuff and thought there must be a way for me to have better looking, clear skin. That’s where I stumbled across the miracle that is apple cider vinegar. Once I saw the results, I knew I had made a new bff! *eureka moment sound effect*. What’s more, I also discovered a whole bunch of other uses for ACV. You can use this elixir from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet, lit-er-ally.
So what’s the good stuff made of?
Apple cider vinegar simply put, is a vinegar made from fermented apples. Now you can find all sorts of varieties of this vinegar in supermarket shelves, but the kind that you really want is organic, unfiltered and unpasteurized. There’s a big reason for this.
You see, all the clear, sparkly looking varieties have all been heated, filtered and heavily processed, meaning that all the phytochemicals, minerals and enzymes have been zapped out of the vinegar. The vinegar isn’t alive anymore, and really it’s those living nutritional elements that make it the powerhouse that it is. Ideally, you are looking for a mucky brownish-yellowish vinegar with a cobweb-by like substance that usually sits at the bottom of the ACV. This cloudy web-like substance is called the mother (I am being so serious).
What really gives ACV it’s incredible cleansing and nourishing properties are the high concentrations of potassium and acetic acid found in it. Potassium is a crucial building block for the makeup of essential body salts and electrolytes, as well as playing an important role in heartbeat, protein combination and muscle contraction. Whereas acetic acid aids with absorption of nutrients from foods you eat, as well as slowing down the release of sugar into your bloodstream (doubly whammy!).
Alright, enough with the science lesson. Let’s get into it.
The top 9 benefits of apple cider vinegar
1. Clears your skin like no man’s business (or no woman’s business in our case).
Oooh yeah! Like I mentioned earlier, ACV is great for wiping off all that makeup right before you head to bed or you can even use it as a toner. It will leave your skin smooth and supple in the morning. It’s really amazing! The way to use it, is to dilute 1 part vinegar with 3 parts water, then just apply some on a cotton pad and wipe away.
(Word of caution, your face may smell like a salad, so if you share your bed with your other half you may want to put something else on afterwards like a night moisturiser to cover it up! Also DON’T use it on your eyes, it stings!)
2. Removes dandruff and treats an itchy scalp.
You can either use it as a prewash treatment or in the shower. I like to use mine while I’m in the shower before I apply a conditioner. You can start off using the same ratio I mentioned earlier (1:3) and see how your scalp responds. I found that I needed a stronger solution to stop the dandruff and itchiness, so I increased it to 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water, and that has worked out really well for me. So play around with it and see what works for you.
3. Increases metabolism leading to weight loss.
You heard right! Just add a couple of teaspoons to 1 cup of water and drink before each meal. You can lose up to 2-4 lbs in 4 weeks fo freeee. This is also helpful if you suffer with acid reflux.
4. Treats bad breath.
You can swap store bought mouthwash with this natural remedy. Same as above, add 2 teaspoons of ACV to 1 cup (250ml) of water and gargle a mouthful of the solution for a few seconds, spit it out and repeat until the glass is empty.
5. Cures a sore throat.
Nobody likes having a sore throat or a cough for that matter. Once again ACV has got your back. Just gargle the same solution as the bad breath remedy above and you should be feeling better in no time.
6. Improves digestion and alleviates constipation.
It just keeps getting better and better friends. ACV aids in the absorption of nutrients from the foods you eat. So in essence, it unlocks the nutritional value that is found in food that you would otherwise miss out on! As a result, there ain’t nothin but smooth sailing concerning the flow of food in your gut.
I would say 1 cup (250ml) of water with 2 teaspoons of ACV every morning should do the trick.
7. Stabilises blood sugar levels.
This right here is mind blowing!
A study done in 2004 (from the American Diabetes Foundation’s publication Diabetes Care) found that taking ACV before meals lowered the participants blood sugar levels by up to 50%. The participants who benefitted the most were those who had pre-diabetic signs. The other two groups of participants (diabetic and healthy) both had positive results, with their blood glucose levels being lower as well.
Whatchu waitin for?! Go guzzle that stuff down!! Prepare the same mixture as in point 3 and drink before every meal until you see an improvement.
8. Can be used as a powerful cleaning agent.
As you would have gathered, apple cider vinegar is unparalleled when it comes to it’s rep for cleaning. You can use it to clean almost anything from your windows to your carpet! But you would have to prepare different solutions for each use, let me know if that’s something you would like to try and I’ll write a separate blog post about it.
9. Removes bacteria and pesticides from your produce.
Bet you didn’t see that coming! Do you know how epic that is? This means that if you can’t access or afford organic produce you can use this hack to eliminate pesticides and bacteria from your fresh produce! I will say this though, any vinegar has the same effect. You also don’t wanna do this with fragile produce like berries as they spoil easily, so it’s best to get your berries organic. What you will need to do, is briefly soak the produce in a bath of 90% water and just 10% of vinegar and then rinse well.
Just a final word of warning, I know it’s quite exciting how much ACV can do for you but don’t go overboard ya? You should never consume undiluted apple cider vinegar, as the acetic acid is quite strong and can damage your tooth enamel and the tissue surrounding your mouth and throat.
So why not give one of these hacks a try and lemme know how it goes? Or if you have any other tips that I haven’t mentioned here, then do us all a favour and share the knowledge on my FB group here, and don’t forget to say hey on Instagram!
Alright peeps, over and out.
