Its an epidemic, that all of us who have ever set foot into a 9-5 office job have suffered with at some point. Even Sally with her prepped salads and packed fruit doesn't stand a chance, ESPECIALLY when it comes to office birthdays. All that chocolate and cake spread across the office kitchenette counter provocatively means that no man (or woman) can stand a chance.
It really is such a problem, especially since us Brits love our snacks. So. Much.
How I found out about this product
A couple of months back, I was scrolling through my Instagram feed (you know, as one does when they're supposed to be productive instead), and I stumbled across a small start-up company called PO-TEN-CY and was immediately drawn to their grey, rustic backgrounds (I'm a sucker for all things rustic), and simplistic, chic packaging. But what got me hooked was their product.
Or products I should say.
PO-TEN-CY as mentioned on their Instagram page provides "Healthy energising snack pots and sharing boxes designed to give you a potent hit of nutrients and taste. Hand made and delivered in London".
I mean, how ingenious is that! We're talking about an idea that could help with the British public's snacking problem!
Slight tangent, but I must say that the latest studies have shown that constantly snacking throughout the day, even if the snacks are healthy is actually not great for our bodies. Our bodies are not designed to continuously snack, as snacking constantly produces insulin, a hormone which consequently puts our body into fat storage mode.
Having said that, I still think there is a place for snacking occasionally, and healthy snacks sure are better for you than refined sugar, high fat and preservative filled sweets!
Why I love this product/service
Think about it. Imagine if instead of chocolates and cakes for office birthdays that are adding to your inflammation and feeding disease, we're talking fresh juices, energy balls and brownies. All plant based and packed with nutrients, all out of this world delish, delivered right to your door step?! I honestly don't know why anyone would resist that. You are getting the best of both worlds. You can have your (figurative cake but it's more like an energy ball) and eat it.
I also love the fact that the food is made from fresh ingredients and has a shorter shelf life than your standard snack. It means it doesn't have added chemicals or preservatives. It goes off, you know, like how REAL food does.
Another brownie point goes for the hand delivery. The founder of PO-TEN-CY makes her own snacks and delivers them herself which is such a nice touch. It means you make a personal connection with the person behind the business and the food which you are about to consume. Makes big old London feel so much cosier.
Why I love this brand
I arranged to meet Zoe, the super talented girl boss (who's an absolute babe) behind PO-TEN-CY, after reaching out on Instagram and she agreed to bring along some samples of her yummy food (I love my life) to try out. We got talking and getting to know each other, and I thought I would let you hear straight from her, since I think its important to bridge the gap between our food and where/who it comes from.
"Following a lifelong love of food having been born into a family of restaurateurs, my interest in holistic nutrition began when my son was born. I quickly noticed that what I was eating had a profound effect on my son’s digestion whilst we were breastfeeding. Food (and plenty of love) soon became my main focus on giving him the best start in life.
Fast forward a few years, to when my son was diagnosed with a developmental disorder. As soon as assessments started, I plunged myself into seeking alternative diets and therapies, as it was the only way I knew I could practically help. I’ve kept him off dairy, casein, gluten and refined sugars (apart from the mandatory royal icing for his Pikachu birthday cake!) for 3 and a half years, and the effect on his mood, behaviour, performance and digestion has been notable. The link between gut and brain is much stronger than we think, especially for those with delicate systems.
Developing PO-TEN-CY has been a labour of love. I developed from working as a private chef, and creating detox programmes for clients in their homes, to running the catering for an events company
When I was ready for a new challenge, I moved on to chef at a café in a West London Health Club, run by a nutritionist. I learnt a lot from her, and after 18 months there, I realised that I wanted a new challenge and to find my creativity again, so PO-TEN-CY was born.
The name is meant to represent strength. Powerful ingredients, that become even more potent when combined with others. It’s important to really enjoy food - it's one of life's most simple pleasures - but also to acknowledge that it’s there to fuel us and prevent disease. When you eat well, exercise, and feel balanced mentally, you’re in an optimum physical place to realise your potential. Hence, potency!"
What do they deliver exactly?
I got to try out some of the product samples and those are the ones that I'll be talking about here. PO-TEN-CY also delivers other cold pressed juices, energy balls, raw trail mix and protein shakes but I haven't tried them out so they won't be included in this review.
Alright lez do dis.
Spinach, Lime, Cucumber, Apple + Basil Cold Pressed Juice
If you've never had green juice before, there is nothing to be intimidated about. And this juice right hurr is no different. In fact it actually tastes so refreshing! I really enjoyed it. It's as sweet as an apple, as cool as a cucumber and the basil just gives it that beautiful fragrant hit that makes this green juice a total hit.
BBB Brownie Bites
The BBB stands for black beans, beetroot and buckwheat. And once again don't be intimidated, you CANNOT taste the veggies in these brownies, which is a testament to Zoe's skills. These brownies also contain medjool dates, raw cacao, organic eggs, vanilla & coconut oil. (The other organic ingredient are the black beans).
So for those of you who are trying to cut back on sugar this would be a great option as it doesn't taste as sweet as you would imagine them to be. They also happen to be very light which was quite surprising since brownies are usually really rich. You can easily devour the whole lot if you're not careful!
Also worth mentioning that they are gluten free and dairy free.
Raw Cacao, Peanut Butter + Salted Caramel Energy Balls
Ohhh you girls are really gonna like this one. It's everything you want it to be too, rich, creamy, warm, chocolatey, gooey in your mouth, it's just pure indulgence. Pictured at the bottom, you can see the peanut in the centre that just adds another dimension of texture to it. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. 2 thumbs up!
Lemon, Cashew, Maca + Poppy Seed Mini Energy Balls
This was a curve ball for me. I'm the type to usually go for all things chocolate and despise lemon in my desserts. But this. I mean there's energy balls and then there's ENERGY BALLS.
This made me emotional. It was incredible. I don't know how she did it, but the flavours are VERY interesting. It's not as zingy as you would expect something with lemon to be. It starts off with the faint lemon flavour and then the creaminess of the cashews and maca takes over afterwards that gives it a warm sweetness to it. I still don't comprehend it. But point is, this was my favourite. In fact favourite energy ball of all time, this is coming from an energy ball enthusiast.
Other Stuff You Should Know
PO-TEN-CY also delivers team boxes for offices and family boxes (Hallelujah!) so you can have them delivered straight to your door!
I asked Zoe where she sees PO-TEN-CY going in the next few years, and here was her response:
"In a years’ time, I see myself with a PO-TEN-CY team, having a great time hand making our products, which I would never see compromised. Delivering to as many offices and families around London as will have us, every day of the week. I’d love to start delivering lunches also, and I already cater for press days and events.
I make a lot of bespoke healthy birthday cakes, and I’d love to develop an entire range of snacks devoted to kids. I think that will be my focus further down the line, which I suppose I have my son to thank for - he led me down this path!"
Have you ever tried out PO-TEN-CY? Or any other healthy meals/snacks delivery service?
